Old bills causing poor credit, what to do?

Aaron asked:

So for five years or so I was really broke and I’ve accumulated a lot of small old bills. Nothing really big, $100 here, $300 there, all told it’s under $5000, which I realize is not much compared to folks that have a ton of credit card debt, of which I have none.

I have a good job now and I’m able to cover all of my living expenses, but I can’t generate any extra money to take care of these little bills all over. I don’t want to declare bankruptcy, but I really want to improve my credit rating and find some way of dealing with these bills. Are there any services out there to help a person in my situation? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Jose

Pay your bills, make arrangements, it’s the only way

Get your bills together and contact a credit counseling organization; they will contact your creditors and make arrangements for you to pay back, they can often get penalties reduced or removed and lower interest rates. Then you make one payment a month to the credit agency.

Any “services” that are out there are just going to cost you more money!

If you have no “extra money” after paying your bills, you either need a better job, or a cheaper place to live/cheaper car/cheaper hobbies, etc./extra job…

Record every penny you spend for four weeks. Every penny. Likely you will be ASTONISHED how much money you literally waste, that could be paying off your debts…

    Good luck!
