It's good that you already have a credit card, but if you don't owe anything on it then don't leave it dormant. It can help you build up a credit history, so do use it every month, and pay it off in full every month to avoid being charged interest.

It's odd that your credit score is too low to get a debit card when you haven't any black marks like missed payments. If I were you I would request a copy of my credit file to make sure there are no errors (it's very rare, but not unheard of).

Are you on the Electoral Roll (if you're in the UK)? Make sure you're registered here:

This is a good article, with more information and lots of advice:

Paula

Come, come, you need to be honest with yourself. Nobody gets a low credit score because "i work damn hard for my money". Low credit scores are a byproduct of missed payments, exceeding your credit limit, bankruptcy, and similar negative items on your credit report. If you really don't know why your score is so low, look it up using the free credit report link below. Then work on avoiding the negative items in the future.

Dawn

where do you live? wells fargo would let you open an account (opportunity checking), they did it for me! I also got a secure credit card from them and after one year I actually had a score. just don't be late paying your bills, don't max out your credit cards and don't apply for too many (credit cards,loans,etc...) it doesn't look good on your report.
