Poor credit rating What can I do?
Peggy asked:
Recently, I have been turned down for jobs, housing, and an auto loan due to bad credit. The only thing on my credit is medical bills. Very large ones and lots of them that I can not afford to pay. I have no medical insurance and can not get medicaid because I am not pregnant, under 21, or over 65, or disabled. I was born with a genetic disorder that often results
in trips to the emergency room, hospital stays, etc.
I need a job, have been turned down 8 times because of credit.
I can’t file bankruptcy because I can’t afford to pay for credit counseling and filing fees – even on an installment plan. That
would not improve y credit anyway.
What can I do ? I can’t get any credit, a job, or anything.

Talk to the financial people at the hospital, doctor’s office, etc.
Most have a policy of reducing or canceling bills in true hardship cases.

Certainly you are in a desperate situation. Though maybe not what you want to hear but there are s many questions that come to mind.
First have you talked to an attorney about filing for bankruptcy? Most 1st visits are free, so if you have not start there.
Second is have you gone to Social Security office and discussed with them disability because your condition and frequent hospital trips could keep you from gaining full time employment?
Third is have you considered two part time jobs for the short term rather than one full time job? Maybe not the best choice but will provide income for the short term.
Understand that there is no quick fix for your credit scores.

opt for a chapter 7 bnkruptcy
The Chapter 7 bankruptcy is applicable if you have no regular sources of income. It works by reducing or clearing off all your debts. You can then make a fresh start without having to worry about having to pay your debts.
Once you file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the bankruptcy court assigns a trustee who works as an intermediary between you and the debtors. He oversees everything and checks out if the bankruptcy plan is going as planned.

I am ashamed of the fact that my country lets people like you slip through the cracks.
Even if you file bankruptcy, you will always have more medical bills due to the chronic condition, so I don’t see that as an option.
First, file an explanation with the credit bureaus, to be depicted on your credit report to anyone who pulls it up. Have an explanation of the medical problem and the resulting credit problems prepared and ready for any potential employer. But I can see how even then, it’s a tough way to go. Many employers will tell you its the credit, when really they don’t want you on their medical insurance.
Try getting it declared a disability.
Consider living in a country which provides healthcare.
Start your own business on a shoestring, most likely online, and that you incorporate the business and keep its books completely separate from your own. Done right, the corporation will be able to protect your business from the medical bills. Eventually, your company can build its own credit.
Best of luck.

You can improve your credit score with knowledge, some time, some effort and not a lot of money. Start by learning the credit laws in the United States. The big one that will help you is that credititems. If they can’t prove it’s correct or don’t respond in time, the items must be removed.
